What the Streets Hold

What becomes visible when no one is performing

Photograph: Leroy Skalstad

A person can enter a photograph without ever knowing it. They may be going home, avoiding someone, carrying good news, or thinking about a life that is invisible to everyone around them. The photograph cannot tell us the whole story. But sometimes it catches the moment when something private appears in public.

WHAT THE STREETS HOLD is an open call for street photography. We are interested in what people reveal without intending to: how they wait, protect themselves, occupy space, move toward one another, or remain separate while standing side by side.

The photographs may be made on streets, in stations, markets, public transport, neighborhoods, or anywhere strangers temporarily share the same place. A person may be central to the image, barely visible, or present only through what they have left behind.

We are not looking only for dramatic events, visual coincidences, or perfectly timed gestures. We are looking for photographs that make us pause because something in them feels known — even when we cannot fully explain what happened.
